Detailed description of Sycamore Canyon Golf Course, CLOSED 2014

Sycamore Canyon Golf Course, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Arvin, California

Sycamore Canyon golf course first for play in 1989. The course was designed by Bob Putman.

Sycamore Canyon golf course quickly became known as one of the better golf course in the greater Bakersfield area. Sycamore Canyon golf course is known for the eleven lakes, which come into play on 12 holes, combined with large undulating greens and many strategic bunkers make Sycamore Canyon not only scenic but a challenging round of golf for many different levels of play.

In 1993, Sycamore Canyon served as the first round of PGA tour qualifying course at which PGA tour player Jim Furyk reportedly first qualified.

The property is bordered on all sides by agricultural land. Since there is no residential element to this golf course, it makes for a very pleasurable golfing experience.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 7100 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5744 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 9, a par-5 that plays to 602 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 8, a par-3 that plays to 181 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 6, a 425 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Sycamore Canyon golf course is # 15, a 518 yard par-5.

Sycamore Canyon Golf Course sold to developers in 2014 who intend to convert the course into an almond orchard and repurpose the clubhouse into a wedding venue.

The buyers, brothers John and Jeff Haddad, say at least 150 of Sycamore’s 160 acres will hold almond groves to be planted sometime in 2015.

Remodeling is already under way to make the 10,800-square-foot clubhouse into a second location for JEH Ranch, a wedding and special events venue on the Kern River.

i'v played this course for the last 15 years and it's always been a joy, only a couple times a year are the greens less than perfect. not the most plush course in the county but from the tips it's a challenge to break 80.....i most readily recommend this course and will countinue playing as long as they will have me!!!

Would travel: 10-20 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Ranks with the best in this price level, Bargain priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

The course has a pretty easy layout, it's longer than most courses in the area but with the fairways being hard & some hard pan in the roughs....it doesn't seem long due to the extra distance you get off your shots. My favorite thing about the course were the greens. They were in excellent shape and actually bit like they should, compared to hard greens that roll 30 feet even with spin on the ball, so you can attack the pins. For a public course, it is in good shape and worth the extra 10 minute drive if you're tired of playing the other public courses in Bakersfield, plus it is so much less crowded so you can actually enjoy a round without having to wait 5-10 minutes on every hole.

We enjoyed this course because it is away from the major population. Fun course, nice clubhouse with friendly staff, and no houses!
